In a decisive move aimed at upholding environmental standards, the Ogun State Government has shuttered operations at four industrial facilities found guilty of serious environmental infractions.
The affected companies, located along major highways in the state, include Colourful Africa Recycling Limited, Dinshengyuan Plastic Company Limited, Long Xiang Aluminium Nigeria Limited along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, and Yilbao Plastic Nigeria Limited on the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway.
According to a statement released by Luke Adebesin, the Information/Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), the closures were ordered by Hon. Farouk Akintunde, Chairman of the State Taskforce on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement and Special Adviser to the Governor on Environmental Matters.
The statement highlighted various egregious violations observed at each facility.
It stayed that Colourful Africa Recycling Limited was found to have operated without the necessary environmental approvals and was accused of discharging untreated waste into the surrounding environment.
Dinshengyuan Plastic Company Limited was cited for operating without requisite environmental clearances and failing to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to its workers, thereby exposing them to potential environmental hazards.
Long Xiang Aluminium Nigeria Limited faced closure due to repeated discharge of untreated effluents despite earlier government directives to cease operations temporarily.
Similarly, Yilbao Plastic Nigeria Limited, involved in the collection and recycling of PET bottles, was accused of persistent pollution and inadequate wastewater management practices.
Akintunde expressed regret that despite multiple warnings and opportunities provided for the companies to rectify their infractions, they persisted in violating environmental regulations.
He emphasized that the state government’s decision to shut down these facilities was imperative to safeguard public health and enforce environmental best practices.
In the statement, Akintunde commended industries that uphold environmentally friendly practices, underscoring the government’s commitment to promoting high standards across all sectors.
He warned that any industry found wanting in environmental compliance would face similar consequences as part of ongoing efforts to ensure sustainable development in Ogun State.
