The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Sokoto State, Bello Goronyo, has expressed confidence that the party can reclaim its mandate in the 2027 general elections without aligning with any other political party.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting on Saturday in Sokoto, Goronyo said the PDP remains the most viable and time-tested political platform in Nigeria, with deep grassroots support and a legacy of better governance.
“We have the capacity to reclaim our mandate. We are the best choice—tested and trusted by Nigerians,” he declared.
Goronyo said the outcome of the 2023 general elections served as a “litmus test” that reaffirmed the PDP as the people’s preferred party, despite not winning at the federal level.
According to him, Nigerians will not allow a repeat of the current economic and social hardship they face under the All Progressives Congress administration.
“Under PDP leadership, Nigerians experienced better days—economically, democratically, in terms of security and education,” he said.
The party chieftain lamented the skyrocketing cost of essential commodities, noting that the price of a bag of rice now ranges from N90,000 to N100,000, while the national minimum wage is still N70,000.
He compared this to the PDP era when rice cost about N30,000–N35,000 and the minimum wage was N30,000.
He further stated that the only path to restoring Nigeria’s past glory was by returning the PDP to power at all levels.
Goronyo stressed that the PDP remained the only surviving party among the five originally registered in 1999, adding that its endurance was a testament to its strong organisational structure and grassroots loyalty.
He also criticised the current APC-led administration in Sokoto State, accusing it of pursuing anti-people policies.
“We have witnessed a waste of resources on unnecessary road fencing projects and the destruction of business areas under the guise of beautifying the city,” he said.
He urged the state government to focus on policies that empower citizens, especially given Sokoto’s ranking among the poorest states in Nigeria.
“The government must halt the demolition of commercial areas and invest in initiatives that generate income for the less privileged,” Goronyo added.
He called on party members to remain committed, united, and prayerful as the PDP continues its efforts to reposition the country and improve the welfare of its citizens.
The PDP, which ruled Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, is currently the main opposition party at the national level.
