No fewer than four Nigerian soldiers were killed in the early hours of Saturday when suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched a deadly assault on the 27 Task Force Brigade in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The assailants, believed to be fighters of the Islamic State-backed faction, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), stormed the military base in a coordinated ambush, opening fire and detonating explosives that caught troops off guard.

Military sources confirmed that the attackers breached parts of the facility, destroying several operational vehicles and carting away weapons and other critical equipment.

“We were taken off guard by the heavy explosion and gunfire, but we stood our ground,” a soldier who survived the attack disclosed .

“Yes, we lost four of our men, just as they also suffered casualties. A lot of our fighting equipment was destroyed during the encounter.”

The attack, which reportedly lasted several hours, marks a fresh escalation in terrorist activity across the North-East.

Just two weeks earlier, ISWAP insurgents carried out a similar assault on Buni Yadi, killing three soldiers and looting food and livestock.

In a post on its verified Facebook page on Saturday evening, the Nigerian Army confirmed a separate ongoing confrontation in Buni Gari, also in Yobe State, stating, “Troops of Operation HADIN KAI currently in a fierce battle against ISWAP attack at Buni Gari, Yobe State. Details later.”

Residents expressed growing concerns about the persistent insecurity in the area. “My hometown came under attack overnight by Boko Haram terrorists,” one resident said.

“Three soldiers were killed, and foodstuffs and livestock were carted away. However, the army recovered three vehicles from the terrorists.”
