Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command have gunned down a suspected armed robber while arresting 8 others and recovering four AK -47 rifles in Maitama, Abuja.

CP Ajoa Adewale, the FCT police commissioner who disclosed this to newsmen in Abuja, on Tuesday, said it happened after the FCT police operatives in a coordinated joint tactical operation led by the scorpion squad have successfully dismantled a seven man robbery gang that specializes in armed robbery and jacking.

He said the gang had been on the command’s watchlist following multiple armed robbery and vehicle theft incidents traced to their network.

He said upon receiving credible intelligence information that the syndicate was planning to rob an unsuspecting victim around Maitama on Monday, a police team swiftly mobilized and intercepted them.

According to him, the armed robbery gang upon sighting the officers opened fire, resulting to gun duel.

He said one of the suspects, Abdulmininu Bello aka Babanle, was neutralized in the process.

He listed the other suspects who were arrested as Ibrahim Muhammad, ex-convict from Kebbi State; Abubakar Abdullahi from Plateau State; Sarajo Yusuf, also from Plateau State; Isiaka Adamu, also an ex-convict from Bauchi State, Abdullahi Isah, an escapee detainee from Bauchi State, Sanusi Ali, a resident of Kano State as well as Abubakar Sani, from Plateau State, were arrested at the scene.

CP Ajoa, however, disclosed that the armed robbers gang leader, Solomon Bawa aka Pastor Mogu, and one other suspect fled with gunshot wounds.

He said among exhibits recovered by the operatives at the scene included, a 2004 Toyota Camry LE, one red boxer motorcycle, two locally made pistols with ten rounds of live 9mm ammunition, 4 AK47 rifles and magazines, 11 rounds of live 7.62 ammunition and one locally made shotgun.

The police commissioner, said all the eight robbery suspects who are currently in police custody would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation.
