Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has declared his intention to run again for president in 2027 under the same party’s platform.
Obi gave the assurance in a video message shared with his supporters via a Labour Party WhatsApp group on Saturday.
The video, which lasts seven minutes and sixteen seconds, features the former governor addressing young Nigerians on the future of the party and the country.
“I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party,” Obi affirmed when asked directly about his political ambition for 2027.
Speaking further, Obi attributed the lingering crises within both the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to deliberate interference by the ruling government.
“What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government — quote me anywhere,” he said.
“We had a problem in our party before, during the time of President Yar’Adua. I went to him; he called the INEC chairman and insisted on a peaceful resolution.
“But today, the problems in all parties are manufactured by the system. These are the very issues I seek to address if given the opportunity.”
Obi also criticized the weakening of internal democracy and institutional independence, emphasizing that a functioning democracy requires a credible opposition.
“You can’t have a working system without strong opposition parties. If the government frustrates every alternative voice, then democracy becomes a façade.”
On concerns about his perceived distance from party affairs, Obi urged his supporters not to lose faith, noting that his political journey remains grounded in reform.
He charged Nigerian voters, especially the youth, to take ownership of the electoral process. “Even when parties send agents to polling units, it is ultimately the voters who defend democracy. We must ensure that our votes count.”
Addressing the future of political leadership in Nigeria, Obi said there should be a retirement age for politicians. He hinted that the 2027 elections might be his last attempt at the presidency.
“By the next election, I’ll be 65. I don’t want to be contesting when I’m in my 70s. This country needs fresh energy and new ideas.”
