Labour, APC bicker over Tinubu’s mid-term scorecard

The organised Labour and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have differed on the mid-term scorecard of President Bola Tinubu’s two years in office as the country marks the second anniversary of the administration.

In his assessment of the two years of Tinubu’s government, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, said the last two years have been far from renewing hope, except to recycle the same failed neoliberal experiments of the past from the IMF and others.

He said the government promised bold economic reforms that would reshape the economy and set it on a path to prosperity, but ended up inflicting more suffering and hardship on workers and ordinary Nigerians.

“Far from renewing hope, his administration has recycled the same failed neoliberal experiments of the past, proving once again that you cannot cure a patient by prescribing the poison that made them sick in the first place,” he said.

He added, “The naira, left to the so-called ‘market forces,’ has collapsed in value, turning Nigeria into a bargain basement for neighbouring countries while local industries suffocate under the weight of imported inflation.”

However, the APC’s National Vice Chairman (South East), Dr Ijeoma Arodiogbu, said the NLC’s evaluation lacked depth and objectivity and failed to engage with the real issues and instead chose to grandstand.

“It’s disappointing to see a professional body making comments that sound more like what you’d hear in a marketplace. They ought to consult economists and policy experts before making such superficial remarks,” he said.
