The Northern States Governors’ Forum has described the devastating flood that struck Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State as a national tragedy that demands urgent and coordinated action.

The Chairman of the forum and

Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incidents and extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Niger State over the catastrophic flooding.

Daily Trust reports that the disaster, triggered by torrential rains, claimed over 100 lives, left many more missing, and displaced thousands of residents.

It was reported that the deluge also destroyed hundreds of homes, farmlands, and critical public infrastructure, leaving entire communities in despair.

Governor Yahaya described the scale of destruction as heartbreaking and urged all stakeholders to intensify efforts in bringing immediate relief and long-term recovery to the affected areas.

He praised the swift response of the Niger State Government under the leadership of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, as well as the efforts of emergency management agencies working tirelessly to provide humanitarian aid and restore order.

“This tragic event highlights the growing threat of climate-induced disasters and the urgent need for sustainable flood control and resilience strategies across Northern Nigeria,” he stated.

The governor pledged support for victims and the Niger State government, calling on well-meaning individuals, corporate organisations and development partners to join in the relief and recovery efforts.

“As we mourn with the bereaved families and stand in solidarity with the displaced, we are ready to work with Niger State in taking decisive steps to ensure such disasters are better mitigated in the future,” he added.
