The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State made him cry following a deep sense of betrayal.
Wike, a former two-term governor of Rivers, made the revelation on Monday during his monthly press briefing in Abuja.
He said he was overwhelmed with emotion after watching past videos of Fubara praising him, only to later turn against him.
“When I go back in my quiet moments, I play the videos of the governor’s speeches—what he said, what he did to me—I weep,” Wike said.
“Was it necessary? This was somebody who brought you up, gave you food, gave you everything. And then you became a tool for his enemies to fight him.”
Wike, who was instrumental in Fubara’s emergence as governor in 2023, lamented that Fubara had allowed political adversaries to use him as a pawn against his benefactor.
“This was somebody you gave everything to,” he added. “Then all of a sudden, he brought armed robbers to shoot you. Would you forget that just like that?”
The crisis between the former allies erupted shortly after Fubara assumed office, spiraling into a full-blown political feud that affected governance in the state.
President Bola Tinubu intervened by declaring a six-month state of emergency, suspending the governor, his deputy, and the state assembly.
A sole administrator was subsequently appointed to manage the state’s affairs.
Wike confirmed that although Fubara recently visited him to seek reconciliation, the two had not held a follow-up meeting.
“People brought him to beg me, saying he’s your son. I agree,” Wike said.
“But how do you feel when the child you sent to school comes back with people holding guns to kill you?”
The minister stressed that peace was desirable but not at the expense of memory and justice.
The rift between the two men continues to shape the political landscape in Rivers State, with observers watching closely for the next move in what has become a deeply personal and political battle
