Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has received with profound sorrow the news of the passing of one of Nigeria’s most revered elder statesmen, Professor Jibrin Aminu, who died at the age of 85.

In a deeply moving tribute, Governor Fintiri described the late Professor Aminu as “a towering figure in Nigeria’s intellectual, diplomatic, and political landscape,” noting that his death marks the end of an era defined by integrity, patriotism, and service to humanity. He emphasized that the loss is not only a profound one for Adamawa State, where Professor Aminu was a native and a source of immense pride, but also for the entire nation, which greatly benefited from his vast knowledge, principled leadership, and decades of unwavering service.

Professor Jibrin Aminu’s contributions to Nigeria spanned several critical sectors of national life. A brilliant academic and accomplished administrator, he first distinguished himself in the field of education—earning national and international recognition for his scholarly work. He later went on to serve Nigeria with rare distinction in various high-profile roles: as Minister of Education, where he championed reforms aimed at improving access and quality; as Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, where he oversaw one of the nation’s most vital economic sectors with transparency and vision; as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, where he strengthened diplomatic ties during a pivotal period; and as a Senator representing Adamawa Central for eight years, where he was a respected voice of reason and a committed advocate for his people.

“In every role he occupied, Professor Aminu brought unmatched intellect, deep wisdom, and an unshakable commitment to national development,” Governor Fintiri said. “He was not just a public servant—he was a statesman in the truest sense of the word. Nigeria has lost one of its brightest minds, a man who gave his all to the country without seeking personal gain or glory.”

Governor Fintiri went on to describe Professor Aminu as “a rare breed of patriot and a silent reformer whose legacy spans education, diplomacy, governance, and politics.” He added that Professor Aminu’s calm demeanor, humility, and thoughtfulness set him apart in a time when such qualities are increasingly rare.

“His life’s work is an enduring gift to the nation. He inspired generations through his actions, and his legacy will continue to influence Nigerian society for years to come. The void he leaves behind is immeasurable, but so too is the light of his legacy,” the Governor stated.

In his prayers, Governor Fintiri asked Almighty Allah to forgive Professor Aminu’s shortcomings, reward his noble deeds, and grant him eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus. He also extended his deepest condolences to the immediate family, the people of Adamawa State, and all Nigerians who were touched by Professor Aminu’s exceptional life.

“Though his passing has left a profound void in our hearts, we take solace in the remarkable legacy he has left behind,” Governor Fintiri concluded. “May his soul find eternal peace in the infinite mercy of Allah. May his memory continue to guide and inspire us all.”
