The Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has called the Federal Government to address the season disasters critically in order to forestall future occurrences.

The JNI also urged the government to prioritise long-term preventive measures including improved drainage systems, resettlement plans for flood-prone communities, and environmental safeguards.

The JNI Secretary General, Professor Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, in a statement expressed  solidarity with the government and people of Mokwa in Niger state.

According to the statement, “This calamity, which has submerged homes, farmlands, and critical infrastructure, has rendered thousands homeless, disrupted livelihoods, and claimed precious lives. It is yet another stark reminder of the increasing vulnerability of many communities in our nation to seasonal disasters and climate-induced hazards, which ought to be critically addressed by all stakeholders, before more of such engulfs the nation. May Allah forbids. Amin.

“Government should be deliberate and compassionate in addressing the misnomer, as many homes are reportedly on river lanes cum pathways. If the prediction of the Nigerian Metrological Agency (NiMet) is anything to go by, there is serious need to pay attention to the expectation of more thunderstorm and downpour, as the rainy season hasn’t properly begun, but we are already battling with Mokwa!

“Nevertheless, in this moment of great trial, JNI reaffirms its firm concern, support, and compassion to all those affected. The Sultan is particularly moved by the plight of women, children, the elderly, and the vulnerable whose suffering in the aftermath of this disaster is unimaginable.”

He appreciated the Federal Government’s efforts in ameliorating the suffering of the victims and urged it and the Niger State Government to, “not only offer immediate emergency relief but to prioritise long-term preventive measures including improved drainage systems, resettlement plans for flood-prone communities, and environmental safeguards.”

He appealed to the Muslim Ummah across Nigeria and beyond, Islamic charities, humanitarian NGOs, and well-meaning individuals to mobilise urgent relief materials food, clothing, shelter, and medical supplies for the brothers and sisters in Mokwa, “Let us respond with hearts of mercy and hands of generosity, for the most beloved of people to Allah is the one who brings benefit to others.”
