Sowunmi’s ‘The Alternative’ Movement Holds South-West Town Hall In Ogun, Rallies Citizens For Political Rebirth

In a bid to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape and stimulate civic awakening, Segun Sowunmi’s citizen-led political movement, The Alternative, is set to hold its South-West regional town hall meeting in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Thursday, July 3.

The town hall, part of a national consultative tour, is designed to mobilise citizens across the six South-West states for a fresh political direction centred on public accountability, inclusive governance, and visionary leadership.

Sowunmi, a former governorship aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State and a respected political strategist, said the initiative aims to create an open platform where Nigerians can articulate their concerns and collectively shape the political agenda leading into 2027 and beyond.

“We are not just gathering for politics. We are gathering for clarity, for purpose, and for a deliberate decision to shape the kind of leadership we want,” Sowunmi stated in a video invitation circulating on social media.

The Abeokuta town hall follows similar engagements across Nigeria’s geo-political zones — including Jos (North-Central), Kano (North-West), Bauchi (North-East), Port Harcourt (South-South), and Enugu (South-East).

Each meeting has served as a platform for Nigerians to voice their frustrations, share aspirations, and demand a more responsive and accountable political system.

The South-West edition is expected to attract a broad spectrum of participants including professionals, civil society organisations, youth groups, and policy thinkers.

Sowunmi will be joined by notable nationalists, thought leaders, and governance advocates to discuss key national issues and strategies for strengthening democratic institutions.

At the heart of The Alternative’s agenda is the conviction that Nigeria’s political future lies in identifying and promoting credible candidates from the grassroots — individuals committed to integrity, service, and competence, regardless of party affiliation.

Sowunmi noted that the movement was born out of disillusionment with the existing political structures, which he said often prioritise power over the people.

“We need to stop recycling failures. The Alternative offers Nigerians a new route — one rooted in transparency, merit, and citizen ownership of the political process,” he said.

The event is billed to be both interactive and solution-driven, with breakout sessions expected to highlight regional development priorities, electoral reforms, and strategies for deepening citizen engagement.
