The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that 110 political associations have officially submitted letters of intent seeking registration as political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Among the top associations is the Obidient Peoples Party (OPP), stirring public interest due to its apparent allusion to the widely popular “Obidient Movement” that gained momentum in support of Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during the 2023 polls.
According to a document released by INEC on Wednesday, the protem chairman of the OPP is Barry Avotu Johnson.
The group has listed its operational headquarters as No. 3 Mekanbo Close, along Durban Street, Wuse II, Abuja.
However, it remains unclear if the party is officially affiliated with Peter Obi or his support base. Though the “Obidient Movement” launched a digital registration portal and ID card scheme for members in April 2025, no formal linkage to OPP has been confirmed.
Peter Obi, who ran under the Labour Party in 2023, secured over six million votes and finished third in the presidential race.
His movement, largely driven by youth and social media activists, also boosted the electoral chances of several Labour Party candidates across states.
The OPP is not the only group drawing from the “Obidient” label. Other political associations such as the Progressive Obedients Party (POP) also appear on the list of new groups aspiring for recognition.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, confirmed that the commission was reviewing submissions “in line with the procedure outlined in the law as well as our regulations and guidelines.”
“As of Monday, June 23, 2025, the commission has received letters of intent from 110 associations that wish to register as political parties,” Yakubu said.
Meanwhile, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, clarified that what has been submitted so far are expressions of interest—not formal applications for registration.
Other associations seeking registration include the Absolute Congress (ABC) and the About Nigeria Party (ABNP), indicating a surge in interest among political actors to offer alternative platforms in Nigeria’s increasingly competitive democratic space.
