Palace Tussle: Evicted Officials Drag Kano Emir Sanusi To Court

Tension continues to mount in Kano’s traditional institution as three palace officials, recently evicted from the Emir’s palace, have instituted a legal action against the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Lamido Sanusi II, over what they described as an illegal eviction and destruction of personal property.

The suit, filed at the Kano State High Court in Bichi, comes on the heels of rising controversy surrounding the leadership of the Kano Emirate since Sanusi’s reinstatement as Emir.

The plaintiffs — Usman Dako, who holds the title of Galadiman Sallama, Auwalu Maikudi, Sarkin Lema, and Sani Mohammed, popularly known as Sani Kwano — are demanding redress for what they claim was a politically-motivated purge based on perceived disloyalty to the Emir.

According to court filings, the officials are suing Sanusi alongside 12 others. They accuse the Emirate Council of violating their rights and unlawfully destroying their belongings during the forceful ejection from the palace grounds.

In response to the suit, the court has issued an order mandating all parties to maintain the status quo ante, effectively halting any further action or retaliatory measures pending the outcome of the legal proceedings.

The palace has yet to issue an official statement regarding the lawsuit.

However, the legal action adds a fresh layer of complexity to Kano’s already turbulent traditional leadership saga, which has drawn significant political and public attention in recent months.
