An operative of the Osun State Amotekun Corps, Officer Peter Samuel Tope, has died after he was allegedly attacked and stabbed by a soldier in Ijeda, Ilesa axis of Osun State.
The commander of Osun Amotekun, Brigadier General Isaac Omoyele (retd), confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Osogbo on Sunday.
According to Omoyele, the fatal attack occurred around 5:45 p.m. on Saturday when a soldier, reportedly a new recruit dressed in full military camouflage, stormed the Amotekun office in Ijebu-Jesa with what he described as “hostile intent.”
The soldier was said to have made disparaging remarks about the Amotekun Corps before attacking Officer Tope, who was returning to the post on a motorcycle.
“The soldier and his accomplices reportedly ambushed the officer, knocked him off his motorcycle, and struck his head with a hard object,” Omoyele said. “The brutal assault lasted about 20 minutes, leaving the officer critically injured and bleeding.”
Tope was rushed to Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesa where he later died in the early hours of Sunday.
Omoyele described the incident as a “cowardly and unprovoked attack” and demanded a full-scale investigation by the authorities, vowing that Amotekun would not rest until justice is served.
He added that the case had been reported to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ijebu-Jesa.
The spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident, stating that the suspect, identified as a Private in the Nigerian Army, had attacked two Amotekun officers using a jack-knife.
“One of the victims has died while the other is receiving treatment. We have identified the prime suspect and are working to apprehend him,” Ojelabi said.
