A violent jailbreak rocked the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, in the early hours of Tuesday, leaving five correctional officers injured and 16 inmates on the run.
According to a statement by Abubakar Umar, spokesperson of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), the incident occurred when a group of inmates launched a coordinated attack on officers manning the facility, overpowering them before breaching the prison gates.
Two of the injured officers are in critical condition and currently receiving treatment at a government hospital, while three others sustained varying degrees of injury during the fracas.
“Seven of the fleeing inmates have been recaptured and are now back in custody,” Umar said, adding that an intensive manhunt is underway to locate the remaining escapees.
The Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, who visited the scene of the jailbreak, condemned the attack and ordered a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape.
He vowed that any staff found negligent or complicit would face severe sanctions.
“An immediate search operation, in collaboration with sister security agencies, is ongoing to re-arrest the fleeing inmates,” Nwakuche stated.
“We urge members of the public to stay calm, remain vigilant, and report any suspicious movements to the nearest security formation.”
