A torrential downpour that struck Potiskum, Yobe State, in the early hours of Friday has submerged several communities, displacing hundreds of residents and destroying properties.
The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) listed the affected areas as Old Prison, Filin Mashe, Unguwar Makafi, Unguwar Jaje Bakin Kwari, Afghanistan, Tsangaya, Karofi, Bayan Garejin Dan Juma, Jigawa Bayan, Makarahuta, and Tandari.
Executive Secretary of SEMA, Dr. Mohammed Goje, confirmed that emergency alerts were received shortly after the rain began, prompting the immediate deployment of field teams for rapid assessment and intervention.
“No loss of life has been recorded so far, but our detailed assessment is ongoing. The government will ensure that life-saving support, protection, and immediate relief reach all affected persons,” Goje assured.
Governor Mai Mala Buni has directed SEMA to provide swift relief materials to the victims, reiterating his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
He urged residents to remain vigilant during the rainy season and promptly report emergencies to relevant authorities.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier warned of heavy rainfall in parts of Yobe State, predicting flash floods, riverine flooding, and soil erosion. Residents were advised to take precautionary measures to reduce the impact.
Current weather forecasts indicate a 100 percent chance of rain in Potiskum with thunderstorms likely and temperatures peaking at 79°F.
Government agencies say they are intensifying efforts to mitigate the effects of the flooding and restore normalcy in the affected communities.
