The Borno State Police Command has arrested a suspected car thief, Umar Lawan, after recovering a vehicle stolen during an armed robbery in Ogun State.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday, disclosing that the arrest was made following intelligence provided by the Car Dealers Association in Maiduguri.
According to Daso, the dealers had raised suspicion about a white Toyota car with Lagos registration number SMK 975 JY, which Lawan attempted to sell without providing convincing proof of ownership.
He explained that police operatives attached to the Command’s Crack Squad swiftly swung into action, intercepted the suspect, and recovered the car.
“Investigation revealed that the vehicle documents bore the name Joseph Nnoma Mary of No. 3 Jegede Street, Matogun, Ogun State. Further checks confirmed it was stolen during an armed robbery incident in Ogun,” the statement read.
Daso added that Lawan confessed the car was handed over to him in Lagos by one Karama Bulama Mohammed, who is currently on the run.
“The Command has made arrests connected to the case, while efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspect,” the PPRO said.
He assured residents of the police command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities.
