Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has dismissed eight operatives of the Agunechemba Security Outfit following their brutal assault and public stripping of a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Miss Jennifer Elobor, in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.
The government announced the decision on Wednesday in Awka through the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi.
He said the operatives, who have already been arrested, would be handed over to the police for prosecution.
Emeakayi described their action as “totally outside the mandate of the agency and utterly condemnable,” stressing that the Soludo administration would not condone any form of brutality, unprofessional conduct, or abuse of office by security operatives.
“The Soludo administration will not tolerate unprofessionalism or human rights abuses. Any officer found guilty of misconduct will face dismissal and prosecution,” Emeakayi declared.
He further disclosed that the government had paid Elobor’s medical bills, replaced her damaged items including a laptop and mobile phone, and formally apologised to her family, the NYSC, and the Nigerian public.
The assault, captured in a viral video shared by The Haven360 Foundation on Facebook, showed armed vigilantes storming the corps members’ lodge, accusing Elobor and her colleagues of being internet fraudsters despite their NYSC identification.
The disturbing footage revealed how the operatives beat her, tore her clothes, and stripped her naked, sparking nationwide outrage.
Civil rights groups, youth organisations, and Nigerians on social media have since demanded justice for the victim and the reform of local vigilante operations in the state.
Emeakayi assured that the incident would serve as a turning point in the operations of community security outfits, noting that government is committed to professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights in all security engagements.
“This is a wake-up call,” he added. “The era of impunity is over.”
