The Oyo State Government has approved the release of N45 million to boost the fight against HIV/AIDS across the state.
Governor Seyi Makinde made the announcement on Thursday at the inauguration of Oyo State HIV/AIDS Control Agency (OYSACA) Ambassadors held in Ibadan.
Speaking through his deputy, Bayo Lawal, the governor said the funds, alongside the procurement of HIV test kits, were aimed at strengthening the agency’s capacity to prevent the spread of the virus and improve access to treatment.
He said his administration remained committed to reducing the prevalence of the disease, while urging the newly appointed ambassadors to leverage their influence to break stigma, raise awareness and mobilise communities in the fight.
“The inauguration of these ambassadors is a milestone in our journey to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat. You are not just representatives but champions of change and voices of hope. Your roles will inspire truth, promote education and ultimately save lives,” Makinde stated.
Among those appointed as OYSACA ambassadors were Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu, former First Lady Mutiat Ladoja, Chief Saka Balogun, Hon. Shina Peller, Rasaq Adeleke, and Wale Saminu.
In his address, the Chairman of OYSACA, Dr. Gbola Adetunji, hailed the governor for his proactive approach, stressing that the funds would help the agency reach high-risk groups and deliver life-saving services.
He added that the initiative marked a new phase of collaboration between government and influential personalities in tackling HIV/AIDS.
The ambassadors pledged to use their platforms to educate, inform and mobilise the public, while promising to champion campaigns against stigma and discrimination.
Dr. Adetunji also commended development partners, including the Global Fund, APIN, and the Society for Family Health, for their continued support to the state in combating the epidemic.
