Amnesty International has raised fresh concerns over the worsening insecurity in Nigeria after at least 65 people were killed in separate attacks across the country this week.
The global rights body, in a statement on Friday, condemned what it described as the Federal Government’s “stunning failure” to protect lives and property despite repeated promises to end bloodshed.
“This week alone, at least 65 people have been killed in horrific attacks,” the organisation stated. “In Katsina State, over 50 worshippers were gunned down inside a mosque, while more than 60 others were abducted.
“In Plateau State, at least 15 farmers were slaughtered by gunmen in Mangu Local Government Area, displacing more than 200 residents.”
Amnesty said the rising wave of killings, abductions for ransom and violent attacks across several states had left Nigerians living in fear.
“No one deserves to live constantly bracing for the next attack or abduction. Nigerians should not be left at the mercy of rampaging gunmen,” the statement read.
The organisation reminded the government of its constitutional and international obligations to safeguard the right to life, stressing that the authorities must do more than issuing promises.
Local officials confirmed Tuesday’s mosque attack in Unguwan Mantau community, Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, where gunmen stormed the village during the early morning Fajr prayer. At least 32 worshippers were killed on the spot.
Katsina Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Muazu, said the attackers launched a reprisal assault on the community.
“The criminals opened fire on worshippers inside the mosque while prayers were ongoing,” he explained.
In Plateau State, survivors recounted how armed men invaded farmlands in Mangu, killing at least 15 and forcing hundreds to flee their homes.
Despite government assurances, incidents of mass killings have continued in parts of the North and Middle Belt, prompting fresh calls for decisive action against insecurity.
Amnesty warned that the authorities’ failure to bring perpetrators to justice has emboldened attackers and further undermined citizens’ confidence in state protection.
