…One soldier killed, two injured as NAF jets hit terrorists’ camps
Nigerian troops under Operation Hadin Kai, with support from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), have killed more than 35 fighters of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) during a fierce battle in Kumshe, a border community in Borno State.
Security sources said the clash occurred in the early hours of Saturday after ISWAP fighters, advancing from the Gulumba Gana axis, launched an assault on military positions in the area.
The insurgents were, however, repelled by superior firepower, leaving scores dead on the battlefield. Intelligence reports indicated that over 35 terrorists were neutralised, while several others who sustained injuries retreated to the Zangeri camp near Gulumba Gana.
Military sources said some bodies of the insurgents were hastily buried by their fleeing colleagues, while others were abandoned due to the swiftness of the troops’ response.
The Nigerian Army also confirmed casualties on its side, with one soldier killed and two others injured during the exchange of fire.
To support ground forces, NAF fighter jets carried out precision airstrikes on terrorists’ assembly points along the Nigeria-Cameroon border.
According to Air Vice Marshal Ehimen Ejodame, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, the strikes destroyed four major ISWAP camps near Kumshe.
“The operation underscores the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to close air support for ground troops while dismantling terrorist logistics and movement corridors in the volatile border region,” Ejodame said.
Chief of Air Staff, Hasan Bala Abubakar, praised the gallantry of the troops and precision of the aircrew, assuring that intelligence-driven operations would continue until ISWAP and other terror groups are wiped out.
Saturday’s offensive is seen as a significant blow to ISWAP, which has been trying to consolidate its foothold in border communities despite repeated setbacks from joint military operations.
