The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has intensified its clampdown on fake and unregistered drugs, raiding illegal markets in Abuja, Lagos, Kaduna, and Asaba, with seized products valued at over N110 million.
In a statement on Tuesday, the agency said the nationwide special enforcement operation targeted street hawkers and peddlers who openly sold fake, expired, and unapproved pharmaceutical products in defiance of regulations.
Items confiscated during the raids included aphrodisiacs, oxytocins, narcotic analgesics, tramadol, morphine, sex-enhancement drugs, antibiotics, painkillers, and several other unwholesome products considered unsafe for human consumption.
No fewer than 15 suspects were arrested and detained in the exercise, pending the conclusion of interrogation and further investigations.
NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, warned that the distribution and sale of medicines in unauthorised places remained a grave violation of Nigeria’s drug laws, stressing that offenders would face stiff sanctions.
She cautioned Nigerians against patronising hawkers and unlicensed sellers, noting that such practices not only endanger public health but also fuel the circulation of counterfeit medicines.
“NAFDAC will not relent in ensuring that all violators are brought to justice. Our priority is to guarantee the safety, quality, and efficacy of foods, medicines, and other regulated products available to the public,” Adeyeye said.
The agency reiterated its commitment to mopping up unwholesome products from circulation and urged Nigerians to buy only from licensed pharmacies and accredited outlets.
