The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has assured Nigerians that there is no confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the country, despite reports of a fresh outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The agency issued the clarification on Saturday following an announcement by DRC’s Ministry of Health that at least 28 suspected cases and 15 deaths, including four health workers, have been recorded in Kasai Province as of September 4, 2025. Laboratory tests conducted in Kinshasa confirmed the Ebola Zaire strain as the cause of the outbreak.
In a public health advisory, the NCDC said Nigeria remains free of Ebola but disclosed that surveillance has been heightened, particularly at land borders, airports and seaports.
It added that health facilities across the country have been placed on alert with strengthened infection prevention and control measures.
“Early recognition, isolation of patients, and supportive treatment reduce the risk of death,” the agency stated, urging Nigerians to practise strict hand hygiene, avoid direct contact with persons exhibiting unexplained fever, diarrhoea, or bleeding, and shun handling of wildlife or raw bushmeat.
The Centre also cautioned healthcare workers to maintain a high index of suspicion, adhere to infection control protocols, and report suspected cases immediately.
The NCDC further noted that an approved Ebola vaccine, Ervebo, is available and has been deployed by response teams supported by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in DRC.
Travellers were advised to avoid non-essential trips to countries with confirmed Ebola cases.
Nigerians arriving from affected countries within the last 21 days who develop symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or unexplained bleeding have been urged to immediately call the agency’s toll-free line, 6232, for assessment.
While assuring the public of safety, the NCDC reminded Nigerians that the country is currently battling multiple outbreaks including Lassa fever, meningitis, diphtheria, measles, and anthrax.
“The situation is under close monitoring, and Nigerians will be provided with timely updates,” the agency said.
