Panic gripped the National Assembly Complex on Sunday when security operatives discovered the decomposing body of a labourer inside a parked vehicle within the highly fortified premises.
The deceased, identified as 55-year-old Gaddafi Iwar, was found slumped in a red Peugeot 406, with registration number BWR-577 BF, around 9:00 a.m. near the annex gate of the Assembly.
Eyewitnesses said the vehicle had been parked in the same spot for several days, raising questions about surveillance lapses in the area.
Police sources confirmed that Iwar was a construction worker engaged at a site within the Assembly complex. Preliminary findings suggest he may have died days earlier before his body was noticed.
Security operatives from the National Assembly Division swiftly evacuated the remains, first moving the corpse to the Assembly Clinic before transferring it to Asokoro General Hospital, where doctors confirmed it had reached an advanced state of decomposition.
Spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the discovery in a statement issued Monday.
“On September 7, 2025, at about 09:00 hours, the Command received a distress call reporting the discovery of an unidentified male, suspected to be a labourer, found lifeless inside a vehicle at the National Assembly Complex,” Adeh said.
She added that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the National Assembly Division led the initial response and confirmed the body was discovered inside the parked vehicle.
“The deceased was later identified as Mr. Gaddafi Iwar. His body was evacuated to the hospital, where medical officials confirmed death and noted that decomposition had already set in,” Adeh added.
The FCT Commissioner of Police has ordered a discreet investigation into the incident, directing detectives to unravel the circumstances of Iwar’s death and how the vehicle went unnoticed for days in such a heavily guarded environment.
Security analysts say the development raises concerns about surveillance and monitoring lapses within Nigeria’s legislative complex, which is supposed to be one of the most secure facilities in the capital city.
Police have assured the public that updates will be provided as investigations continue.
