Hundreds of commuters across Lagos State were left stranded on Tuesday morning as Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses failed to arrive at several key terminals, forcing many workers to get to their offices late.
The disruption, which affected terminals at Iyana-Ipaja, Abule-Egba, Ikotun and Akowonjo, left passengers standing in long queues for hours with only a handful of buses available.
As early as 7:15am, commuters had gathered in their numbers at the Iyana-Ipaja terminus, but by 9:20am many were still on the queue with no buses in sight.
The situation sparked frustration as workers worried about missing crucial office hours and business appointments.
One of the stranded passengers said ,“We got here over one hour ago to meet this long queue for buses going to Yaba, and ditto for other areas. We first thought maybe there was a strike because only a few buses are working. Now, we are already late for work.”
Others lamented that they were forced to stand in the few available buses just to avoid being completely stuck.
“This is unfair. The government keeps asking us to patronise public transport, but look at us wasting hours. Some of us will face queries at work for late-coming,” another commuter fumed.
The development also raised concerns about poor planning and mismanagement of the state’s mass transit system, which has repeatedly faced criticism over irregular schedules, insufficient buses, and sudden breakdowns.
Meanwhile, there was no official statement from Lagos State Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) or the BRT operators as of the time of filing this report.
