The Taraba State University (TSU) community has been thrown into mourning following the mysterious death of a 100-level student, Comfort Jimtop Oliver, and her boyfriend, Emmanuel Kefas, who was later found dead hours after her passing.
Comfort, an indigene of Takum Local Government Area and a member of the Kuteb ethnic group, was discovered lifeless on Friday at Kefas’ residence in Jalingo under unclear circumstances. Empty bottles of hard drinks were reportedly found beside her body.
Shockingly, within hours of her death, Kefas — a 2024 graduate of Human Kinetics from TSU — was also found dead in Tudiri community, a few meters from Jalingo, sparking speculations that he may have taken his own life.
The pair, both residents of Bakasi near the university’s Vice-Chancellor’s Gate, were said to have been in a relationship since Kefas’ undergraduate days.
Speaking on the incident, a senior police officer confirmed that the command has commenced an investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
“The bodies have been recovered, and investigations are ongoing. We will ensure the public is fully briefed when preliminary findings are available,” the officer said.
Residents of the area, however, suspect that Emmanuel could not bear the news of Comfort’s sudden death in his house and may have resorted to suicide.
The tragic development has left students and residents in shock, with many calling on authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to determine whether foul play was involved.
