Tragedy struck in Plateau State as suspected kidnappers killed the traditional ruler of Shuwaka, Kyaram District in Garga community, Kanam Local Government Area, six days after his abduction.
The monarch, Hudu Hassan Barau, popularly known as Sarkin Shuwaka, was kidnapped by armed bandits last week, only for his lifeless body to be discovered in a bush on Monday morning.
The Kanam Development Association (KDA) confirmed the gruesome discovery in a statement jointly signed by its chairman, Garba Aliyu, and secretary, Shehu Kanam.
“We are consumed by grief and outrage as we received the tragic news of the death of one of our community leaders. We are still grappling with the shock and pain of this senseless killing and the continued bandit attacks across the communities in the Garga area,” the statement read.
The association described the monarch’s killing as a devastating loss, lamenting that it further underscores the worsening state of insecurity ravaging rural parts of Plateau State.
They also accused both the federal and state governments of failing to adequately protect vulnerable communities in Kanam, which have suffered repeated abductions, killings, and attacks in recent months.
“This tragedy is yet another reminder of the urgent need for decisive government action. Our communities can no longer live under the constant threat of bandits while security responses remain weak or invisible,” the group added.
Residents of Kanam have repeatedly raised alarm over the wave of kidnappings and attacks in Garga, with many communities deserted due to fear of bandits.
Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement on the killing as of press time.
