The Federal Government on Friday announced an ambitious plan to revitalise an additional 8,000 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and significantly expand nationwide immunisation coverage under the 2024–2028 Medium-Term Framework.
The Minister of State for Health, Dr Iziaq Salako, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
Salako said the revitalisation programme aligns with the administration’s push to strengthen social welfare and deepen access to quality healthcare at the grassroots.
“Mr President is committed to human capital development as captured in the 2024–2028 MTF. This includes revitalising 8,000 additional PHCs across the country,” he said.
According to him, the government will sustain the ongoing upgrades of over 4,000 PHCs while simultaneously rolling out new facilities to close healthcare gaps in rural and underserved communities.
“The revitalised 4,000 PHCs and the additional 8,000 on stream can be sustained. The plan is to build a resilient primary healthcare system that Nigerians can rely on,” the minister added.
Salako explained that the administration’s renewed commitment to financing the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) will accelerate the revitalisation programme and ensure stable funding for immunisation campaigns.
He noted that the council’s approval guarantees the continuity and expansion of major immunisation programmes introduced in the last year.
“The commitment to fund immunisation from the MTF means we can scale up innovative programmes Mr President has introduced,” he said.
Salako highlighted the ongoing rollout of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, describing it as one of the most impactful interventions so far.
“The HPV introduction has seen over 40 million Nigerian children immunised,” he stated.
The minister added that the combined measles–rubella vaccination campaign, which reached nearly 30 million children during its initial phase, will be expanded further in 2026.
“The novel rubella rollout can now be scaled up next year. We are committed to strengthening the primary healthcare foundation to improve Nigerians’ quality of life,” he said.
Salako reaffirmed that the Tinubu administration sees primary healthcare revitalisation as a core driver of national development.
