…Onanuga Accuses Ex-Anambra Governor Of Saying What He Does Not Practise
Daud Olatunji
The Presidency has criticised the presidential candidate of the New Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, over his remarks on the management of public funds, with President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, raising questions about allegations linked to the Panama Papers leak.
Onanuga, in a post on X on Wednesday, accused Obi of preaching principles he allegedly failed to practise, citing the international leak of financial documents known as the Panama Papers.
“Peter Obi just likes saying what he doesn’t practise. Remember the Panama Papers?” Onanuga wrote.
The presidential aide also mocked the former Anambra State governor as “Saint Peter”, accusing him of “pontificating” to his supporters.
His comments followed Obi’s remarks suggesting that Nigeria would be significantly wealthier if its leaders prioritised keeping public funds in banks rather than engaging in practices that undermine the country’s financial resources.
By invoking the Panama Papers, Onanuga sought to challenge Obi’s credibility on financial accountability, drawing attention to allegations concerning offshore assets and business interests associated with the former governor during his time in office.
The Panama Papers, a major leak of financial documents published in 2016 by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and its media partners, exposed the use of offshore companies and other financial structures by individuals and organisations across the world.
However, the reference to the leak does not, on its own, establish wrongdoing by any individual. The specific allegations raised by Onanuga would require further evidence and a response from Obi to establish their context and accuracy.
