A Nigerian national residing illegally in the United States,Laurel Echezonam, has pleaded guilty in a federal court for making false statements while attempting to purchase a firearm.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Echezonam, 25, entered the country unlawfully through the southern border in 2022. Immigration authorities later confirmed that she had no legal status in the United States.
Court records show that on June 7 and 8, 2024, Echezonam travelled from her Vicksburg, Mississippi, residence to multiple firearms dealers, attempting to buy a weapon.
During the process, she allegedly provided false information about her immigration status to deceive the sellers.
“She was denied the firearms based on her immigration status and was subsequently apprehended by immigration officials,” the DOJ statement said.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) is investigating the matter, while Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lynn Murray and C. Brett Grantham are prosecuting the case.
Echezonam pleaded guilty on Monday, December 15, at a federal court in the Southern District of Mississippi. She is scheduled for sentencing on March 17, 2026, and could face up to ten years in prison, depending on the federal judge’s assessment of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The DOJ noted that the case falls under Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative targeting illegal immigration, organised crime, and violent criminal activities.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges U.S. authorities face in controlling illegal immigration and preventing firearms violations by non-citizens.
