The Egba Economic Summit Group on Monday inspected the Wasinmi Airport project in Ogun State, describing the facility as a strategic infrastructure that would accelerate economic growth across Egba and Yewa land while easing pressure on the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
The inspection, which took place on December 29, 2025, was led by the President of the summit group, Dr Gbenga Adeoye, alongside prominent Egba sons and stakeholders, including an engineer and founding member of the group, Engr Ola Sobande, and a former Board Chairman of the summit, Prince Abiodun Karunwi.
Residents of communities hosting the airport site also joined the delegation, expressing their desire to see the project completed and operationalised.
Speaking after the visit, Adeoye said the objective of the tour was to assess the level of work done on the airport, its viability and strategic importance, as well as its proximity to Yewa land.
He noted that the closeness of the Wasinmi Airport to Yewa land positioned it as one of the most important infrastructure projects in Ogun State, stressing that accessibility from the site to key areas underscored its economic relevance.
“It is easy to drive from the airport site to Aga Olowo and Onigbedu. We entered through Wasinmi and exited through Onigbedu along the Ibese Road, which clearly shows how strategic this project is,” Adeoye said.
Engr Sobande described the proposed airport as a critical alternative facility that would help decongest the busy Ikeja Airport in Lagos, adding that it could also serve as an emergency landing option during take-off or landing challenges at the Lagos airport.
On his part, Prince Karunwi said the airport would trigger massive development in the host communities, stimulate business activities and enhance investment opportunities across Egba and Yewa land, noting that its proximity to Yewa land was even closer than to parts of Egbaland.
Adeoye reiterated that the core mandate of the Egba Economic Summit Group was to promote the development of Egbaland and the wellbeing of Egba people and residents, regardless of their origin.
As part of the assessment, the delegation also drove to Aga Olowo and Onigbedu to determine the distance between the airport site and Ibese, further evaluating the project’s economic and logistical relevance.
While wishing Egba people and residents of Ogun State a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, the summit assured that it would continue to monitor and encourage projects capable of driving sustainable development in Egbaland.
Adeoye also disclosed that the group would soon embark on an inspection tour of the Idi Aba–Ajebo–Alapako Express Road to appraise the pace of work, noting that the road would be critical to the operations of the University of Medicine and Medical Sciences located at Ajibayo Village near Kajola in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area.
