A Kano State family has accused a medical facility of grave negligence following the death of a woman, Aishatu Umar, who allegedly lived for months with a pair of scissors forgotten inside her body after surgery.
Relatives said Aishatu died around 1:00 a.m. on Monday after enduring severe abdominal pain that reportedly began shortly after a surgical procedure carried out in September 2025 at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center in Kano.
The case was brought to public attention by a social commentator, Abubakar Mohammed, who identified the deceased as his sister-in-law in a Facebook post.
He disclosed that Aishatu is survived by her husband and five children.
According to the family, Aishatu fell ill last year and was admitted for surgery at the urology centre. Complications allegedly set in soon after the operation, with the woman repeatedly complaining of excruciating abdominal pain.
They claimed that despite several return visits to the hospital, medical personnel allegedly failed to conduct thorough examinations, opting instead to administer painkillers and discharge her, even as her condition worsened.
“She endured this pain for about four months,” Mohammed said, adding that it was only two days before her death that doctors reportedly ordered comprehensive scans and tests.
The results, according to the family, revealed a shocking discovery: a pair of scissors had allegedly been left inside her body during the September surgery.
“Tests finally showed that scissors were forgotten in her body during the operation,” Mohammed alleged.
Plans were reportedly made for an emergency corrective surgery to remove the object, but the family said the intervention came too late.
“Arrangements were ongoing to operate on her again, but she passed away before anything could be done,” he said.
Describing the incident as “pure professional negligence,” the family questioned how such an error could occur in a medical facility, stressing that the tragedy goes beyond the loss of one life and points to deeper concerns about healthcare standards.
“Every soul has its time, but how can trained doctors forget scissors inside a patient?” Mohammed asked.
The family has called on the Kano State Government and relevant health regulatory bodies to launch an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
