The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arrested a Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) tanker driver who allegedly struck and killed a commercial motorcyclist and his passenger along Epe–Ijebu Road in Epe, Lagos.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, confirmed the incident, which occurred at Pokia Junction, inward Araga, during a statement on Wednesday.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the motorcyclist, carrying a male passenger, was riding against traffic on a prohibited one-way route when the tanker, reportedly speeding, collided with them. Both victims died instantly.
“This is a clear violation of traffic laws,” Giwa said.
“The accident was entirely preventable. Had the motorcyclist adhered to traffic rules and maintained a safe speed, this tragic incident would not have occurred.”
LASTMA operatives were immediately dispatched to the scene to secure the area, prevent secondary accidents, and take the tanker driver into custody.
Relevant security agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), were notified, and the victims’ remains were handed over to the Noforija Police Division for further investigation.
Giwa added that the tanker was removed from the road, restoring traffic flow in the affected area.
He urged commercial motorcyclists and other road users to obey traffic regulations and exercise caution, especially around heavier vehicles.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to strict traffic law enforcement to safeguard lives and property across the state.
