The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old woman, Jessica Anthony, for allegedly orchestrating a robbery attack on her boyfriend after recruiting suspected criminals to dispossess him of valuables worth millions of naira.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in Warri on Thursday, saying the suspect conspired with a friend to hire armed robbers to attack her boyfriend, whom she had dated for about two years.
Edafe said the relationship between the duo had earlier collapsed but was later rekindled, adding that they were still intimate as recently as December 2025.
According to him, the suspect, driven by the desire to make money from her boyfriend, went with her accomplice to a known criminal spot in Warri to seek out armed robbers to carry out the operation.
“She told them she wanted her boyfriend robbed, though it was not clear if she disclosed his identity. Unknown to her, the person she contacted was the leader of the community who has been working with the police to flush out criminals,” Edafe said.
He explained that the community leader, who recognised the intended victim after requesting his photograph, immediately alerted him and advised that the suspects should be allowed to play along in order to expose the plot.
The police spokesperson said the fake robbers demanded N65,000 from the suspect and her friend to procure weapons and logistics, which they reportedly provided.
“She later took them to the estate where the boyfriend lives and pointed out his house. It was while they were leaving the estate that the boyfriend alerted security operatives and all of them were arrested,” Edafe added.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed that she planned to extort about N7m from her boyfriend and also steal his gold jewellery, which she believed would fetch huge returns.
“The victim confirmed he owns two gold pieces valued at N4.2m and N8.9m,” the police spokesperson said.
He added that investigations were ongoing and that the suspects would be charged to court upon conclusion of the probe.
The police warned residents, especially couples, to be cautious and report suspicious activities, stressing that criminal intentions could sometimes come from trusted quarters.
