Operatives of the Abia State Police Command have arrested a man for allegedly conducting an illegal voters’ registration exercise for politicians in the state.
The suspect, 47-year-old Chukwuemeka Nwaobilor, reportedly a staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, was apprehended at a football field in Mbawsi, Isiala Ngwa North LGA, with an INEC registration machine intended for official use in Isiala Ngwa South.
According to sources, Nwaobilor was allegedly collaborating with unnamed politicians from the same federal constituency to register voters illegally.
The arrest, which was executed by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Isiala Ngwa North Division in conjunction with the Divisional Police Officer and the local government mayor, followed a tip-off.
He was immediately taken to the Abia State Police Command Headquarters for further investigation.
Mr. Victor Abraham, an INEC staff in Abia State, confirmed the arrest, adding that the commission was meeting to verify the suspect’s identity and the circumstances surrounding the case.
The development has raised concerns about potential electoral malpractice ahead of future elections in the state.
