Tragedy struck on Monday evening as four women lost their lives and 26 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a ghastly motor accident along the Yola–Mubi Road in Adamawa State.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the victims were travelling to the annual convention of the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria in Demsa Local Government Area when the accident occurred.
The Deputy Chairman of Song Local Government Area, Donan Prambe, who witnessed the incident, said the vehicle conveying the women suddenly lost control and veered off the highway.
“I was driving behind the vehicle when I saw it start somersaulting into the bush. It was a terrifying sight,” she said.
According to her, three of the women died instantly at the scene, while several others were found unconscious in pools of blood before emergency responders arrived.
The injured victims and the bodies of the deceased were evacuated to the Specialist Hospital in Yola for medical attention.
When contacted, the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Dauda Wadinga, declined detailed comments, saying medical personnel were battling to stabilise survivors brought in alive.
Efforts to get official confirmation from the Adamawa State Police Command proved abortive as of press time.
The command’s spokesperson, Suleiman Yahaya-Nguroje, said he would provide updates after consulting the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area.
The latest tragedy has heightened concerns over recurring accidents along the Yola–Mubi corridor. Recall that a similar crash involving women travelling to the same church convention reportedly claimed multiple lives at the same location last year.
Residents have since called on relevant authorities to urgently review safety measures on the busy highway to prevent further loss of lives.
