At least 79,000 Nigerians have died from cancer, while 127,000 cases were recorded nationwide between 2022 and 2025, the Chief Medical Director of ****, Prof. Robinson Onoh, has revealed.
Prof. Onoh made the disclosure yesterday during the flag-off of a free cancer screening programme for the South East, noting that the rising incidence of the disease demands urgent intervention and preventive measures.
The initiative, launched by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Ms. Daju Kachollom, is part of a nationwide screening campaign running until the end of February 2026.
The programme aims to provide free cancer screening to 1,000 individuals and offer capacity-building for hospital staff.
“Cancer is a leading cause of non-communicable disease mortality, with breast, prostate, and cervical cancers being the most common and often diagnosed at advanced stages,” Prof. Onoh said.
“The best way to reduce this burden is through primary prevention — health education, awareness campaigns, vaccination, and regular screening.”
He added that breast cancer remains the most prevalent cancer in women globally, with over 2.3 million new cases and 670,000 deaths in 2022.
Cervical cancer ranks fourth among cancers in women, while prostate cancer is the second most common in men.
Prof. Onoh commended President Tinubu, the Minister of Health, and the Permanent Secretary for selecting AE-FUTHA to represent the South East in the World Cancer Day celebration, describing the recognition as a boost to the hospital’s efforts in cancer prevention and treatment.
In her remarks, Ms. Kachollom pledged the ministry’s commitment to reducing cancer incidence in Nigeria and lauded AE-FUTHA for its capacity and potential to emerge as one of the nation’s top teaching hospitals.
Representing the Ebonyi State Governor, Chief Francis Nwifuru, his Deputy, Mrs. Patricia Obilla, said the state government remains committed to partnering with the federal ministry to enhance healthcare delivery, particularly in rural areas.
