No fewer than 18 persons have been killed following a violent confrontation between members of a vigilante group and suspected repentant bandits in Katsina State.
The state government confirmed that the incident occurred on Tuesday in Falale and Kadobe villages in Jibia Local Government Area.
The Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Muazu, disclosed this in a statement, explaining that the crisis began when vigilantes engaged some repentant bandits in a gun duel.
According to him, three suspected bandits were killed during the initial confrontation.
He, however, said the development triggered a reprisal attack by armed bandits on the affected communities, leading to the death of 15 additional residents.
Muazu noted that a joint security team comprising the Nigeria Police, the Department of State Services, Civilian Watch operatives, and local leaders was swiftly mobilised to the area to contain the situation.
“The coordinated response helped to restore calm and prevented further casualties,” he said.
The commissioner appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.
He added that the administration of Governor Dikko Umaru Radda remained committed to tackling insecurity and safeguarding lives and property across the state.
“We understand the pain and loss suffered by affected families. The government is determined to ensure justice and prevent a recurrence,” he said.
