Nigerian troops have recorded a major breakthrough in the ongoing counter-insurgency campaign, killing two top commanders of the Islamic State West Africa Province and 84 fighters during a coordinated ambush in the Malam Fatori axis of Borno State.
The operation, which followed credible intelligence on insurgents’ movements, came barely 24 hours after multiple suicide attacks rocked Maiduguri during Ramadan prayers.
Military sources described the offensive as a “highly successful” mission that combined deception tactics, precision airstrikes and ground assaults to neutralise the террористs.
According to intelligence sources, troops adopted a decoy ambush strategy—deliberately simulating vulnerability to lure the insurgents into a pre-determined kill zone.
“Once the terrorists moved into the trap, airstrikes were activated with precision on their positions,” a defence source said.
The source added that the operation was based on actionable intelligence obtained through collaboration with international technical partners, which revealed the movement and communication patterns of the fighters.
Troops of the 68 Battalion were said to have played a key role in repelling the insurgents and executing follow-up clearance operations.
Among those killed were two senior ISWAP commanders identified as Abu Aisha (also known as Nagif) and Abu Ali Chaptar (alias Gunner Sambisa).
Their bodies were reportedly recovered and confirmed by allied forces at a forward operating base in the area.
Further military action targeted fleeing fighters in nearby locations, with additional террористs neutralised through mortar fire and aerial bombardment along escape routes.
Security sources disclosed that four soldiers sustained minor injuries during the operation.
During the mop-up exercise, troops recovered a cache of arms and logistics materials, including AK-47 rifles, machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, mortar bombs, improvised explosive devices, communication radios and other supplies.
Other items recovered include mobile phones, power banks and documents containing details of suspected террорист operatives.
Military authorities said the success of the operation highlights the growing impact of intelligence-driven strategies, joint operations and precision targeting in degrading insurgent capabilities in the North-East.
The Malam Fatori axis has remained a critical flashpoint in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency, with renewed military offensives aimed at dismantling остатки of extremist networks in the region.
