The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday returned N3.936 billion in recovered funds to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPC Ltd), following investigations into alleged financial misconduct within the corporation.
The handover, which took place at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, was conducted by EFCC Secretary, Mohammed Hammajoda, on behalf of the Commission’s Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.
Hammajoda described the recovered funds as the product of “meticulous investigations” and reiterated the agency’s commitment to pursuing financial crimes.
“On behalf of the Executive Chairman, we will continue to serve over 220 million Nigerians with courage and integrity,” he said.
“Today, we present the sum of Three Billion, Nine Hundred and Thirty Six Million, One Hundred and Forty Five Thousand, Eight Hundred and Twenty Two Naira to NNPC Ltd.”
Receiving the funds, NNPC Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, commended the EFCC for its role.
“NNPC has faced longstanding challenges, and this recovery reflects strong institutional cooperation. We are proud to have EFCC support in ensuring transparency and accountability,” he said.
The statement did not provide details on how the funds were misappropriated or the identities of the alleged perpetrators.
Investigations by the EFCC in the past year have involved former top NNPC officials, including ex-Managing Director Mele Kyari and other senior staff, although none have been publicly charged in connection with the recovered amount.
This is not the EFCC’s first restitution. In recent months, the agency returned N387 million to Jigawa State and N1.28 billion to Enugu State, recovered from cases involving public fund misappropriation.
The EFCC affirmed that its actions are part of ongoing efforts to recover proceeds of crime and ensure funds meant for public development are not diverted for personal use.
