The Ogun State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the death of a female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Victoria Ariyo, who reportedly died following complications linked to a suspected abortion procedure.
Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, was said to have undergone the procedure before her condition deteriorated, leading to her death.
Her remains have since been buried at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape–Sagamu road in Abeokuta.
The police confirmed the incident on Thursday, noting that detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department have taken over the case to determine the exact cause of death.
The development has sparked concern, coming barely a month after another corps member, Adeleye Mary, serving in the same local government area, died under unclear circumstances.
Mary, who was attached to a television station in the state capital, was reportedly found lifeless in her apartment near her place of primary assignment. The cause of her death has yet to be ascertained.
Sources familiar with the incidents said the two deceased corps members were close friends, raising further questions about the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
A source disclosed that while Mary died in her residence under mysterious conditions, Ariyo’s death was allegedly linked to complications arising from an abortion.
According to the source, “The first lady died at her residence. She was found lifeless, and up till now, nobody can say what caused her death. Victoria, on the other hand, was said to have died from complications after an abortion.”
The source also alleged that an NYSC official, believed to have been romantically involved with Ariyo and allegedly responsible for the pregnancy, had been arrested and was currently in police custody at the State Command Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.
However, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, declined to confirm the reported arrest, stating only that investigations were ongoing.
“I can confirm that the case is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department,” Babaseyi said.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State NYSC Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Igba, said he was unaware of the incident, adding that he was currently on leave.
“I am not aware of these incidents as I am on leave and will not resume until April,” he said.
Efforts to reach the State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Olayinka Nasamu, for comments were unsuccessful as of press time.
