A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) has injured a soldier and an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) during a joint security operation in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State.
Security sources said the incident occurred at about 8:35 a.m. on March 18, when troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade were conducting a clearance operation in the area believed to be a hideout of suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
According to counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, who disclosed the incident on X (formerly Twitter), the operatives reportedly stepped on a concealed pressure-activated IED while advancing in the area, triggering the explosion.
The blast left both the soldier and the NSCDC personnel with injuries.
“They were immediately administered first aid and subsequently evacuated to a medical facility for further treatment,” a source familiar with the operation said.
Security forces have since intensified operations in the general area as efforts continue to dismantle suspected criminal hideouts and restore calm.
The Nigerian military and other security agencies have in recent months sustained offensives across parts of the South-East, where they say armed groups have intensified attacks on security personnel and infrastructure.
Authorities are yet to release official statements on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
