Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday raided properties linked to former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, taking over his residences and offices in an operation his camp has described as unlawful and politically motivated.
The development reportedly occurred shortly after a visit by former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, to Malami’s residence, although there was no official confirmation linking both events.
In a statement issued by Malami’s Special Assistant on Media, Mohammed Bello Doka, the former AGF’s office accused the anti-graft agency of acting without legal backing and in disregard of an ongoing court process.
The statement alleged that EFCC operatives, accompanied by heavily armed security personnel, forcefully gained entry into the affected properties, marked them, and took control without presenting any valid court order authorising such action.
According to Doka, two persons were also taken into custody during the operation.
“The office of Abubakar Malami, SAN, wishes to formally address the shocking and unlawful actions carried out today by operatives of the
EFCC at properties associated with the former Attorney-General of the Federation, including his residential and business premises,” the statement read.
He further argued that the matter involving the properties was already before the court, noting that a case instituted by the commission at the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, was still pending without any final determination.
The aide added that an earlier interim forfeiture order reportedly obtained by the EFCC on January 6, 2026, had elapsed after 14 days and could not justify the agency’s latest action.
“At the time of the invasion, EFCC operatives were requested to produce a lawful court order authorising their actions, but they failed to do so,” the statement added, describing the development as “a flagrant disregard for the rule of law and a gross abuse of power.”
Malami’s camp also alleged that the operation was a calculated attempt to harass and intimidate the former minister due to his political affiliations.
While reaffirming Malami’s support for accountability and the anti-corruption fight, the statement stressed that such efforts must be carried out within the confines of the law.
It added that the former AGF would continue to cooperate with lawful judicial processes and defend his rights through appropriate legal channels.
Efforts to get the EFCC’s reaction to the allegations were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
