‘The Muslim Advocacy Group in Ogun State has intensified calls for a power shift ahead of the 2027 governorship election, declaring that it is the turn of a Muslim to lead the state after decades of what it described as political imbalance.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Friday, by its Publicity Secretary, Abdus Semiu Adebesin, the group said the demand was anchored on the principles of equity, fairness and inclusive governance, noting that Muslims have remained largely underrepresented in the state’s top political office despite their significant population and contributions.
The group lamented that since the creation of Ogun State in 1976, only one Muslim has been elected governor out of five democratically elected leaders, a trend it described as unjust in a pluralistic society.
It argued that Muslims in the state have consistently played vital roles across key sectors, including governance, education, business and community development, yet have not been fairly reflected in the state’s leadership structure.
Drawing from history, the group recalled that Christian organisations had, at the end of the tenure of the state’s only Muslim governor, demanded a leadership shift to ensure balance—an agitation that was eventually honoured by political stakeholders.
It insisted that the same standard of fairness must now be applied as the current administration approaches its end.
“Justice cannot be selective. If it was right to concede power on the basis of equity then, it is only fair to do so now,” the statement read.
The group stressed that its demand was not driven by religious bias but by a legitimate quest for balanced representation, adding that Ogun State boasts a pool of competent and qualified Muslim individuals capable of delivering effective governance.
“Our position is rooted in equity with competence. We are not asking for tokenism, but for fairness that reflects the diversity of our state,” it added.
While describing its agitation as peaceful and democratic, the group warned that ignoring the call could breed discontent and weaken the state’s long-standing culture of unity.
It, therefore, urged political parties, stakeholders and opinion leaders to act responsibly by ensuring that the 2027 governorship race reflects justice, inclusiveness and historical consistency.
The group maintained that equitable power distribution remains critical to sustaining peace and strengthening democratic integrity in Ogun State.
