Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have arrested a suspected serial kidnapper, Kelechi Wofuru, who allegedly specialised in abducting victims and dismembering their bodies for financial gain.
The suspect was apprehended following a coordinated intelligence-led operation involving the police and members of the SafeCity Volunteer Foundation, led by Harrison Gwamnishu, alongside a social media tracker who monitors criminal activities.
Investigations revealed that Wofuru had allegedly operated for several years, terrorising commuters along the Omagwa–Isiokpo–Elele Road, where he and his gang were said to target commercial bus drivers and passengers.
A source familiar with the operation said the arrest followed weeks of surveillance and tracking, leading operatives to a forest in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area, where the suspect allegedly led them to the shallow grave of his latest victim.
The decomposing body of the victim, identified as Ifeanyi Ibobo, a commercial bus driver who had been declared missing for several days, was recovered from the forest after the suspect reportedly confessed to dumping the corpse at the location.
Family members of Ibobo had earlier raised alarm over his disappearance, combing parts of Port Harcourt and surrounding communities in search of him before the grim discovery.
Gwamnishu, in a video shared online, said the suspect had previously been arrested and arraigned in November 2023 on kidnapping-related charges but was released under unclear circumstances, only to allegedly resume his criminal activities.
He further disclosed that the suspect is believed to be connected to multiple abductions, adding that investigations are ongoing to recover more bodies allegedly buried by the gang.
According to him, at least seven victims remain unaccounted for, raising fears that more graves may still be uncovered as the search continues.
The Rivers State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the arrest as of the time of filing this report, but security sources confirmed that Wofuru is currently in custody and assisting with ongoing investigations aimed at dismantling the suspected kidnapping network.
