A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced four members of Boko Haram to life imprisonment, following their conviction on terrorism-related charges.
The trial judge, James Omotosho, delivered the judgement on Tuesday after the defendants pleaded guilty to multiple counts brought against them by the Federal Government.
Those handed life sentences are Ali Abiso, Bakura Abah Kabiru, Ado, also known as Luka Garba, and Babagoni Masawai.
The prosecution, led by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, alongside the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, relied on confessional statements and investigation reports tendered through a witness from the Department of State Services.
The court admitted the evidence and subsequently convicted the defendants.
In the charge marked FHC/KNJ/CR/509/2026, Abiso, a 30-year-old indigene of Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, pleaded guilty to all four counts against him.
The prosecution told the court that he participated in attacks across several communities, including Bama, Gwoza, Konduga, Bita, Baza and Aulari, on or before July 8, 2022.
Justice Omotosho sentenced him to life imprisonment on two counts and 25 years each on the remaining counts, ordering that some of the sentences run concurrently.
Similarly, Kabiru was sentenced to life imprisonment on one count and 25 years on others, while Ado received life imprisonment alongside a 25-year jail term.
Masawai was handed life sentences on two counts, 20 years on two others, and 10 years each on additional counts.
In addition, the court convicted 14 other defendants, sentencing them to prison terms ranging between 20 and 25 years after they also pleaded guilty.
Among them, Ali Mustapha was sentenced to a cumulative 80 years imprisonment on multiple counts, although the court ordered that the sentences run concurrently.
Other convicts include Danbawa Salisu, Modu Ali, Sanda Bello, Mustapha Fali, Modu Musa, Bidal Modu, Mohammed Abdullahi, Umar Garba, Usman Ahmadu, Hussaini Bukar, Baba Manye, Musa Mai Modu, and Ali Musa.
The convictions are part of ongoing mass trials of terrorism suspects by the Federal Government.
Fagbemi had earlier disclosed that about 500 suspects are currently being prosecuted in the ninth phase of the terrorism trials taking place before different judges of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The latest judgement underscores the government’s sustained efforts to secure convictions in terrorism-related cases and intensify the fight against insurgency.
