Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Anambra State have arrested a suspected impersonator posing as a coordinator of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
The suspect, identified as Eric Nwombu, was apprehended on April 14 by officers attached to the Inspector-General of Police Safe School Initiative.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the development in a statement on Saturday, noting that the suspect was arrested for alleged criminal impersonation and unlawful possession of examination materials.
Ikenga said the arrest followed a report that the suspect had been collecting 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination slips from unsuspecting candidates at a cyber café in Atani, Ogbaru Local Government Area.
He said, “Items recovered from him include eight JAMB examination slips and an exercise book containing names and examination numbers of students, which he could not satisfactorily account for.”
According to the police, the suspect initially claimed during interrogation at the computer centre that he was a JAMB coordinator for the 2026 examination in the area.
However, his responses reportedly raised suspicion among staff of the centre, who subsequently alerted security operatives.
“On sighting the operatives, the suspect attempted to flee but was swiftly apprehended,” Ikenga added.
He said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting the integrity of public examinations and warned individuals against engaging in fraudulent activities.
He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious actions to the police.
