A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and House of Assembly aspirant for Abeokuta North State Constituency, Babatunde Bayewunmi, has faulted the description of Nigerian youths as a “wasted generation,” describing such a characterisation as unfair, discouraging and contrary to the ideals of leadership.
Bayewunmi made the remark on Friday while declaring his intention to represent Abeokuta North State Constituency in the Ogun State House of Assembly under the APC platform in the coming election.
He said leadership must be rooted in inspiration, inclusion and empowerment, warning that blanket criticism of young people undermines their contributions to national development.
“It is deeply concerning to hear any remark describing an entire generation as ‘wasted.’ As a young aspirant, I believe such language does not reflect the spirit of leadership we should uphold,” he said.
“Leadership should inspire, guide, and create opportunities, not discourage those it is meant to nurture.”
Bayewunmi stressed that Nigerian youths remain a driving force in innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity, despite economic and structural challenges confronting the country.
According to him, young people across communities are already contributing meaningfully to national growth through various endeavours, including technology, agriculture, and the creative industry.
“The truth is simple: no generation is wasted. Our youths are full of talent, innovation, resilience, and courage. Across our communities, they are building, creating, and striving often despite significant challenges,” he said.
He noted that rather than resorting to sweeping generalisations, leaders should focus on addressing systemic gaps and expanding opportunities for young people to thrive.
“Where there are gaps, it calls for reflection and renewed commitment from leadership to strengthen systems, expand opportunities, and provide the right support for young people to thrive,” he added.
The APC aspirant also urged members of the party to uphold inclusiveness in governance, saying the progressive identity of the APC must be reflected in its treatment of the youth population.
“As members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), we must remember that progress means inclusion. A truly progressive party empowers its youth; it does not label them,” he said.
Reaffirming his confidence in the capacity of Nigerian youths, Bayewunmi said the younger generation is prepared to take on leadership responsibilities if given the right environment and support.
“I stand firmly with this generation. We are not wasted; we are ready. Ready to lead, ready to serve, and ready to contribute meaningfully to a better future,” he said.
“What we seek is not condemnation, but commitment; not doubt, but belief; and not limitation, but opportunity.”
The remarks come amid renewed national debate on youth inclusion, unemployment, and the role of young Nigerians in governance and economic development.
