The Cross River State Government has identified and isolated 10 persons who had contact with a Chinese national confirmed to have reintroduced COVID-19 into Nigeria.
The State Epidemiologist, Dr Inyang Ekpenyong, disclosed this on Wednesday, stating that the individuals were traced during an ongoing contact-tracing exercise by health officials.
Ekpenyong said the affected persons had been placed under movement restrictions in their homes to curb further spread of the virus.
She added that health authorities had visited the workplace of the index case in Akamkpa Local Government Area as part of efforts to contain the situation.
According to her, the Chinese national is currently receiving treatment at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital and is responding positively.
“We have restricted their movements to prevent transmission. The index case is stable and responding to treatment,” she said.
The epidemiologist, however, cautioned residents against complacency, stressing that COVID-19 had not been completely eradicated despite the decline in global cases in recent years.
She urged the public to resume precautionary measures, including regular hand hygiene, use of face masks, and adherence to public health advisories.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Henry Egbe Ayuk, had earlier confirmed the development, assuring residents that the government had activated necessary public health response mechanisms to contain any potential outbreak.
Ayuk noted that the resurgence underscores the persistent global risk posed by the virus due to cross-border movements.
“COVID-19 is not peculiar to Nigeria. However, we are on top of the situation and there is no cause for alarm,” he said.
The latest development comes amid renewed concerns among health experts over the possibility of fresh outbreaks, years after the initial global pandemic.
