No fewer than three persons suspected to be linked to the killing of a traditional ruler in Langtang North Local Government Area were on Friday burnt to death by an angry mob.
The incident followed the murder of the village head of Kwallak community, identified as Ponzhi Kwallak, who was reportedly attacked and killed in his residence on Thursday night.
Sources told PLATFORM TIMES that the assailants had stormed the monarch’s home, shot him, and made away with his motorcycle and mobile phone, throwing the community into mourning and heightened tension.
Residents said the three suspects were later apprehended by locals while allegedly attempting to sell the stolen motorcycle.
According to eyewitness accounts, the suspects allegedly confessed to their involvement in the killing before they were set upon by a mob.
It was gathered that some youths initially attempted to hand over the suspects to security operatives, but the situation degenerated when hoodlums overpowered them, seized the suspects, and set them ablaze near the local government secretariat.
A community source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, said, “They were caught and confessed to the crime, but before they could be handed over to the authorities, the mob took over and burnt them.”
As of the time of filing this report, efforts to obtain official confirmation from the police and other security agencies were unsuccessful.
The latest incident underscores growing concerns over jungle justice and rising insecurity in parts of Plateau State, with stakeholders calling for restraint and adherence to the rule of law.
